Pfizer PreventiCare

PreventiCare™… it’s all about good health

strongidc2x.jpg Dr.Garfinkel is a full supporter of Pfizers PreventiCare Program. This program will build a strong foundation for a long healthy life for your horse. Combined with our Wellness Package these two health care programs will help maintain your horse in peak condition and minimize the risk of unexpected life threatening illnesses.

PreventiCare is a unique equine wellness program created for all horses – from the trail to the show ring. It was designed with the idea that by forming a partnership with your veterinarian, you can improve your horse’s health and performance.

Preventive medicine is the key to stopping health problems before they impair your horse’s performance or become life-threatening. By encouraging regular veterinary care and fostering an improved relationship between the horse owner and the veterinarian, PreventiCare helps make exceptional health care possible.

Enrolling in PreventiCare is easy. You’ll work with Dr. Garfinkel to complete a simple enrollment application, and your veterinarian will monitor and document your compliance with PreventiCare requirements. Coverage for eligible horses begins 30 days after receipt of the application by Pfizer Animal Health, and the owner will receive an Official Enrollment Certificate in about 30 days.

There are six minimum requirements when enrolled in the PreventiCare program:

    * Annual physical exam

    * Annual dental exam, along with any advised treatment

    * Appropriate immunizations as recommended by your veterinarian

    * Annual nutritional consultation, when your veterinarian can help you review your feed program to decide whether it meets your horse’s needs

    * Strongid® C or Strongid® C 2X™ administered daily, year ’round

    * Twice-yearly treatments with ivermectin

There are three disqualifications to enrollment in PreventiCare:

    * Any horse that has had colic surgery

    * Any horse that has experienced colic in the last 12 months or has a history of chronic colic

    * Any horse under five months, or not fully weaned, or any horse over 20 years of age

Horses that are officially enrolled before age 20 may re-enroll each year until age 24. If enrollment lapses at any time after age 20, the horse will not be eligible for re-enrollment. Should your horse fall into one of these exclusions, that’s all the more reason you should participate in a wellcare program with your veterinarian. We cannot, however, enroll your horse in PreventiCare.

To participate, all Strongid C or Strongid C 2X must be purchased from your enrolling veterinarian – who is also required to administer all components of the program.

Colic Assistance Plan™

Once enrolled, should your horse suffer a colic serious enough to require surgery, Pfizer will pay for the costs of surgery and up to three days of aftercare, to a maximum of $5,000.

Colic can strike any horse at any time – even horses that receive the finest care money can buy. In May 2000, it almost took the life of the Dutch Warmblood gelding Grandeur, who was just days away from a bid for the 2000 U.S. Olympic dressage squad. Fortunately, a colic surgery paid for through Pfizer Animal Health’s Colic Assistance Plan saved Grandeur’s life.

Timing, luck, a good vet and a great wellness program may have made the difference between life and death for Jeannie Smith’s horse Sonny. On a hot Colorado August day, Jeannie was trail riding Sonny miles from home when he suddenly fell to the ground in a full sweat – pinning her beneath him. Fortunately, a friend had accompanied her and was able to ride to a nearby housing complex and call Jeannie’s vet for help. Sonny was rushed to the veterinarian’s clinic to undergo the colic surgery that saved his life.  Answers to commonly asked PreventiCare questions.

FAQ

Answers to commonly asked PreventiCare questions.

Q: Is PreventiCare considered insurance?

A: PreventiCare and the Colic Assistance Plan are not insurance or a guarantee that your horse will never experience colic. However, a well-structured, veterinarian-supervised, preventive health care program such as PreventiCare will very likely have a positive effect on your horse’s health and reduce your horse’s risk of disease and colic.

Q: I regularly purchase Strongid® C at my local feedstore. Can I continue to buy it there and still have my horse qualify for PreventiCare?

A: To be in compliance with PreventiCare guidelines, your horse must receive daily administration of Strongid C or Strongid® C 2X™, and complete the other five steps of the program. However, Strongid C products must be purchased from your enrolling veterinarian, and he/she must manage all other products and services associated with PreventiCare.

Q: If I’m out of state at a show and my horse develops a case of colic serious enough for surgery, can another veterinarian perform the surgery?

A: Yes. As long as your enrolling veterinarian can attest to your horse’s compliance with the PreventiCare program guidelines, the cost of surgery will be reimbursed by Pfizer. Any qualified veterinarian can perform the surgery. Our main concern is for the health of your horse at the time of the serious colic.

Q: I enrolled my horse in the PreventiCare program with my veterinarian last week. Now he has developed colic serious enough for surgery. Can I assume the cost of surgery will be reimbursed by Pfizer?

A: It takes approximately 30 days from Pfizer’s receipt of a new enrollment to process the paperwork. You will receive an Official Enrollment Certificate stating the enrollment date your horse will become eligible for surgical reimbursement, should a serious colic occur.

Q: Does the PreventiCare Colic Assistance Plan pay for costs associated with a colic that doesn’t result in surgery?

A: The Colic Assistance Plan is designed to offer you peace of mind, knowing that the cost of an expensive surgery will be reimbursed during a time when your horse’s life is in danger. It does not apply to costs associated with a case of colic in which your veterinarian does not recommend surgery.

Q: Once my horse is enrolled in PreventiCare, is it enrolled for life?

A: The PreventiCare program requires annual re-enrollment. The Official Enrollment Certificate you receive will specify the date you must renew your horse’s enrollment. Is It Right for You?
